Abstract

In this chapter, the authors highlight the benefits of using Lean Maintenance, showing and discussing obtained results from studying industrial companies and concluding about used tools and level of this concept implementation in their activity. For obtaining the base results for this work, surveys were used for research carried out in enterprises. Some questionnaires were sent to companies, in Poland, for being possible to acquire some data from their experience and results by using Lean Maintenance. As main achievements of this study, it can be concluded that levels of application of Lean Maintenance, and respective used tools, are different, when analyzed by the type of company: small, medium, or large. In most companies, the employment level of maintenance services has not changed significantly due to the implementation of Lean Maintenance. Only in large enterprises and mostly with numerical machines, the employment level of maintenance services employees decreased. Large enterprises achieved the greatest benefits from the implementation of Lean Maintenance tools.

Background

European standard EN 13306 defined “maintenance” as the “Combination of all technical, administrative and managerial actions during the life cycle of an item intended to retain it in, or restore it to, a state in which it can perform the required function (function or a combination of functions of an item which are considered necessary to provide a given service)”. According to (Velmurugan & Dhingra, 2015) “maintenance is not just ensuring the healthiness of equipment in a facility but it also plays a crucial role in achieving organization’s goals and objectives with optimum maintenance cost and maximum production. […] and needs to be viewed as a strategic function in an organization.”
