Abstract

The hospitality sector is a fragile sector. This means that it is very fragile when a crises hits, such as political, environmental, and financial crises. The operation of hotels relies a lot on the ability of the personnel to offer high quality services. Therefore, HRM plays a strategic role in the sustainability of the hospitality sector, especially during a crisis. For this purpose, the chapter has made not only a literature review into the overall use of SHRM for navigating the hospitality sector during a crisis, but also more precisely for the case of the COVID-19 crisis. Indeed, the related findings – deriving from the existing literature – indicate that there is limited research on this field.

Background

The aim of this chapter is to investigate how strategic HRM (SHRM) can help the hospitality sector to deal with the effects of COVID-19 crisis and to find ways to help the organizations in the tourist sector to meet their strategic goals. There is evidence that an effective Strategic HRM can have a positive effect on the resilience of the personnel towards the COVID-19 measures (Le and Phi, 2021; Belias & Trihas, 2022b). It is important to mention that hospitality relies on the provision of effective and quality-driven services delivered by the personnel (Chand, 2010). Therefore, an effective SHRM policy and strategy is expected to leverage the ability of a hotel to cope with the consequences of the COVID-19 crisis, though this is something new and the related research is pretty limited (Le & Phi, 2021). Hence, this chapter will help the academia and the practitioners to understand how Strategic HRM can leverage the hospitality sector during the COVID-19 crisis.
