Abstract

Turkey is among the countries that the pandemic has affected most profoundly. Many people have been infected, and the pandemic has given way to both physiological and psychological problems. In this study, the effect of teleworking, which has been embraced durng the pandemic, has been tested on the anxiety levels of Turkish participants. The research has been carried out on white-collar employees working in the service sector. The related data has been collected through online surveys. In the related field study, 2,892 online questionnaires have been sent, and 385 usable questionnaires were obtained. Analysis of the study has been carried out with SPSS 20.0 statistics tool. The results of the study revealed that teleworking has a negative effect on anxiety levels of individuals, as predicted in the study.

Introduction

The Covid-19 pandemic has revealed the lack of business level contingency to respond to crises (e.g., a that has created the need for reorganization in many organizations (Belzunegui-Eraso and Erro-Garcés, 2020). Many sectors had to give Unfortunately, about 8% of people are employed in closed sectors suggesting that they experience considerable wage losses (Duman, 2020). The outbreak of the pandemic has created the requirement for social distancing giving way to remote working (Prin and Bartels, 2020). Unfortunately one of the most important effect of Covid-19 pandemic has come about to be the slowdown, recession and constriction in the economies of almost all countries (Acar, 2020).

Actually, remote working or in other words teleworking has been constantly growing on all over the world in myriad sectors in the last few decades in relation to the digital revolution. However, the pandemic has created a huge necessity for teleworking (Contreras, Baykal and Abid (2020) among the sectors that mostly prefer teleworking, specifically service industry is prominent with the biggest percentage of workforce working remotely (17%), later comes the health industry (12%) and than comes the finance and banking sectors (10%), manufacturing sector (8.5%) and education sector (7.5%) (He et al., 2020). The Covid-19 example has showed us the fact that individuals with high strength to cope with difficulties and lower levels of anxiety can overcome this test more easily (Baykal, 2020c: 23). Hence in this study, it is atempted to see what properties of teleworkers are important in their tendencies to feel anxious. Factors including age, gender and sector has been investigated in the hypotheses of the study.
