Abstract

Sustainable supply chain management has emerged as a critical concern in the petroleum transportation industry, driven by the growing global demand for energy and increasing environmental concerns. As petroleum products play a significant role in meeting energy needs worldwide, ensuring their safe and efficient transportation is crucial. However, the petroleum sector faces numerous challenges throughout its supply chain. This chapter aims to explore these challenges and their implications for sustainable supply chain management in petroleum transportation. With issues such as carbon emissions, water pollution, and resource depletion, this chapter will provide insights into the complexities of achieving sustainability within this industry and highlight potential strategies to overcome these challenges. Hence, in this chapter, an effort is taken to prioritize challenges of the petroleum industries by using the WASPAS (weighted aggregate sum and product assessment) method. The managers or stakeholders can take necessary steps in taking action against petroleum transportation.

Introduction

Sustainable supply chain management is the most important concern in the petroleum industry. During the transportation of petroleum, the main focus is on reducing environmental pollution and ensuring proper utilisation of resources. To fulfil the rising demand for petroleum-related products, there is an increasing realisation of the negative effects connected with their production, distribution, and consumption. Hence, sustainable supply chain management plays an important role in mitigating these negative impacts and promoting sustainability throughout the supply chain on a priority basis. So, the main goal is to identify the challenges faced by petroleum companies during petroleum transportation. Sustainable supply chain management will resolve issues like emissions reduction, energy efficiency, waste management, stakeholder engagement, and regulatory compliance. Hence, the most important task is to understand the challenges and identify possible solutions to implement sustainable practises within the petroleum transportation industry. In petroleum and transportation, the most important environmental challenge is the risk of oil spills, which can have devastating effects on ecosystems and wildlife. These spills contaminate water-bodies and also reduce air quality by releasing volatile organic compounds. The most important environmental challenge is the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) throughout the petroleum transportation process.

The emissions during combustion of fossil fuels highly impact on climate change, and transport activities. Transport of petroleum products requires large amounts of energy over long distances and pollutes the air through exhaust emissions. Infrastructure development for petroleum transportation also destroys natural habitats and ecosystems. Pipelines, roads, and storage facilities can disturb sensitive ecosystems and disrupt wildlife migration patterns. To mitigate these challenges, sustainable supply chain management practices must be implemented.

Key Terms in this Chapter

SSCM: Sustainable Supply Chain Management. The organization which performs its operations and supply chain obeys social and environmental regulations and also instructs its suppliers to follow the environmental guidelines, is called as sustainable supply chain management.

MCDM: Multicriteria decision making method used to create a decision variable matrix by considering criteria and alternatives and used to prioritize.

WASPAS: A mcdm method used to find weighted total sum and total model to rank criteria and alternatives.

ISM: Inter pretieve structural modelling is a technique to find complex relation matrix and relation between them.
