Abstract

In smart city planning and development, smart transportation integrates advanced technology with traditional transportation systems to maximise sustainability, safety, and efficiency. Intelligent transportation systems collect and analyse vehicle movement, traffic patterns, and other data using sensors, data analytics, and AI. This data can then be utilised to optimise transport systems, decreasing emissions, enhancing safety, alleviating traffic, and boosting quality of life. Intelligent transport, which improves transport network sustainability, efficiency, and security, could transform urban mobility, and elevate living standards. In this chapter, intelligent transportation systems and their benefits are extensively covered. Mobility-as-a-service platforms, connected and autonomous vehicles, and intelligent transportation networks are investigated as emerging transportation technologies. This chapter also discusses the policies and norms needed to install intelligent transport systems and the obstacles to their implementation.

Introduction

“Smart transportation” is the term used to describe the integration of advanced technologies into traditional transportation systems with the intention of improving them. Concurrently enhancing the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of conveyance is the aim of these technologies, which are designed to optimize the user experience. The components of smart transportation systems (Jan et al., 2019; Saarika et al., 2017) include intelligent transportation systems, connected and autonomous vehicles, and mobility-as-a-service platforms. There are numerous benefits to intelligent transportation. The aforementioned benefits include improved road safety, reduced traffic congestion, average emissions, and universal transportation service accessibility. Moreover, intelligent transportation has the potential to yield cost reductions and improved service quality by enhancing the overall efficiency of transportation networks (Dewi & Putra, 2021; Jimenez, 2018). However, there are various challenges that hinder the successful integration of intelligent transportation systems. Impediments to the implementation of intelligent transportation systems include technological challenges, infrastructure requirements, regulatory and policy barriers, and societal acceptance issues. To guarantee the secure, efficient, and equitable implementation of intelligent transportation systems (Aamir et al., 2019; Fantin Irudaya Raj & Appadurai, 2022), it is critical that policymakers and transportation stakeholders work together to effectively address these challenges.

The benefits that intelligent transportation systems, the transformational technologies that support this industry, and intelligent transportation systems themselves are examined in detail in this chapter. The paper also investigates the policies and regulations that are crucial for the successful deployment of intelligent transportation systems, in addition to the obstacles and difficulties that arise during their implementation. Case studies of successfully implemented smart transportation systems from around the world conclude the chapter.

Motivation

The purpose of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest developments and emerging trends in the field of transportation technology with respect to intelligent transportation. The purpose of this chapter is to analyze the profound and far-reaching effects that various technologies have had on the movement of people and goods, in addition to the benefits and challenges that these technologies present. Furthermore, the report examines the function of diverse stakeholders in promoting the execution of intelligent transportation solutions, as well as the requisite policies and regulations that support this process.

The primary aim of this chapter is to provide a valuable resource for industry professionals, policymakers, and researchers who have an interest in intelligent transportation. This chapter serves as an introductory overview of the latest developments and trends in the field, laying the groundwork for subsequent analyses and inquiries. Moreover, the chapter provides insightful viewpoints regarding the challenges and opportunities associated with the implementation of intelligent transportation solutions. The implications of these insights for policy and industry-level decision-making are substantial.
