Abstract

The tourist sector is going through a transformational change in the modern digital era. An in-depth analysis of the shifting paradigms that have arisen at the nexus of technology and tourism is provided in this systematic assessment of the literature. The chapter examines the crucial impact that cutting-edge technologies like the internet of things (IoT), metaverse, artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, virtual reality, augmented reality (AR), and blockchain have had on changing travel patterns. The combination of these technologies enables destination stakeholders to manage resources more effectively, personalizes and streamlines the traveler experience, and provides policymakers with tools for data-driven decision-making. This research adds to the current discussion on how the tourist business is changing in the digital era by shedding light on the shifting paradigms, possibilities, and problems in the field of smart tourism.

Smart Tourism Mindset

Smart foundations are ultimately the cornerstones around which robust and successful tourist companies are built. Perles-Ribes & Ivars-Baidal, (2018) developed the smart sustainable tourism business model that depicts all the elements of a sustainable business. Governance and Innovative approaches that are directed towards long term sustainability and effective utilization of the scarce resources form the strategic relational elements of the business model. A sophisticated information system with integration of big data and artificial intelligence to create a digital economy and smart infrastructural is instrumental in developing such a model. These systems are then applied into the destination infrastructure to create smart solutions regarding information dissemination to tourists and stakeholders, enriching the visitor experience and better management of the destinations thus creating a global image and visibility through intelligent destination management practices.
