Abstract

This review examines the latest advancements in waste management technologies, particularly focusing on sorting and processing innovations poised to revolutionize current practices. Automated sorting technologies such as optical sorting, NIR sorting, and robotics combined with AI are discussed for their efficiency in separating recyclable materials from mixed waste streams. Advanced processing techniques like pyrolysis, gasification, MBT, and chemical recycling are explored for their potential to convert waste into valuable resources while minimizing environmental impact. Challenges including cost, contamination, and regulatory frameworks are also highlighted. Despite obstacles, these technologies offer promising solutions to enhance recycling rates, reduce landfill disposal, and promote sustainable waste management practices globally, calling for continued research and collaboration to address implementation barriers and maximize their benefits.
