Introduction

The retail industry in India has witnessed significant growth and transformation in recent years, driven by a burgeoning consumer market, increasing disposable incomes, and a shift towards organized retail. As a result, retailers are faced with the challenge of meeting consumer demand while ensuring that products are consistently available on the shelves. The problem of out-of-stock incidents has become a critical issue that retailers must address to maintain customer satisfaction and stay competitive in the market (Schleper, et al (2021). Retail supply chain management plays a pivotal role in ensuring product availability, optimizing inventory levels, and reducing out-of-stock incidents. A well-functioning supply chain is the backbone of the retail sector, linking manufacturers, distributors, and retailers in a complex web of activities that ultimately deliver products to consumers. In this context, it is essential for retailers to have a holistic understanding of their supply chain and implement strategies that minimize out-of-stock incidents, which can lead to lost sales, dissatisfied customers, and brand erosion (Frederico, G. F. (2021). This paper aims to delve into the challenges and opportunities within the Indian retail supply chain, specifically focusing on strategies and best practices to ensure product availability and reduce out-of-stock incidents. It will explore various aspects of supply chain management, including demand forecasting, inventory optimization, distribution network design, and the integration of technology to streamline operations. By addressing these key areas, retailers can enhance their operational efficiency, improve customer satisfaction, and drive sustainable growth in the dynamic Indian retail market (Walker, J., et al (2022). Furthermore, this research will examine the unique characteristics and constraints of the Indian retail environment, such as diverse consumer preferences, varying regional demand patterns, infrastructure limitations, and regulatory considerations. These factors make it crucial for retailers to adapt their supply chain strategies to meet the specific needs of the Indian market (Kumar, S., et al (2021). In the subsequent sections, we will discuss the current state of the retail industry in India, the challenges associated with out-of-stock incidents, and the potential consequences for retailers. We will also explore the key elements of an effective retail supply chain, including demand forecasting, inventory management, and distribution network optimization. Additionally, we will highlight the role of technology and data analytics in enhancing supply chain performance (Taylor, D et al (2020). By understanding these components and implementing best practices, retailers can work towards a future where out-of-stock incidents are minimized, product availability is optimized, and customer satisfaction is maximized (Ziady, H. (2020). The content analysis conducted in these studies involved the synthesis of existing information regarding various aspects of supply chain disruptions. This encompassed categorizing the types of disruptions, assessing their impact on supply chains, scrutinizing resilience methods integrated into supply chain design, and evaluating recovery strategies proposed within the studies, often supported by cost-benefit analyses. Furthermore, our review delved into prevalent modeling approaches associated with this subject matter, providing indicative examples, and also explored the information technology tools that play a pivotal role in bolstering resilience and mitigating disruption risks (Katsaliaki, et al (2022).
