Abstract

Engineering education is facing the challenging task of creating competent engineers due to COVID-19. In the pre-COVID-19 scenario also it was facing challenges like quality of teachers, infrastructure, approach of the regulating authorities, and competitiveness. Engineering education in India is imparted through government-aided, private self-financed institutes of technologies. Engineering teachers from private engineering colleges face the problems of work environment and motivation. Politics in private engineering colleges plays a demotivational role in engineering education. The political influence and unethical practices in many organizations are killing motivation for excellence in honest teaching professionals. In staff selection also, many times, political background is taken into consideration. Management many times encourages incompetent people due to the non-technical factors that are not relevant to teaching quality. Internal politics among the staff members for hiding uncompetitiveness plays deteriorator in engineering education.

Scenario Of Engineering Education In India

Engineering education needs to inculcate moral and ethical values in engineering education. Responsibility towards society and environment is one aspect and another is work ethics. According to Tucker and Ferguson ethics and social responsibility can be inculcated during undergraduate engineering education (Tucker & Ferguson, 2007). Pre-and post-semester survey of students in engineering course was carried out by them. Ethics and social responsibility were incorporated in their survey. Based on the survey, they highlighted the need to increase awareness about social responsibility to the students. According to Hynes and Swenson, attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions shift are important elements in research towards making engineering education more responsible and socially relevant (Hynes & Swenson, 2013).

Kreiner et al. (2004) discussed ethical issues faced by engineering professional and the engineering profession. According to them, ethical practices in engineering are important as they are directly related to human safety and environment. They suggested that students must be taught engineering history for understanding the effects of various wrong and right engineering practices. They emphasized that engineering teachers must be encouraged to teach confrontation with the ethical problems, examining the standards of conduct with critical thinking and the competence. According to Sohoni (2012) there is an urgent need for engineering professionals to address social problems and solve them. Pons (2023) identified the key characteristics for successful engineering management by graduates. He discussed the difference between engineering scientist and professional engineer. He reiterated that management was essential attribute of a professional engineer.
