1.0 Introduction

Amidst the fast-paced nature of contemporary lifestyles, when prioritizing convenience is common, people often neglect to consider the environmental impact of their everyday decisions. One such issue that has attracted substantial attention in recent years is the environmental impact of single-use coffee cups. The pervasive prevalence of these cups in everyday rituals has raised apprehensions regarding their impact on pollution and waste (Marx‐Pienaar & Erasmus, 2014,Brewis & Jack, 2005). As customers become increasingly aware about their environmental imprint, various solutions have evolved to overcome the ecological difficulties posed by these seemingly innocent containers. The convenience of obtaining a hot cup of coffee on the go has become a fundamental aspect of contemporary culture. However, the convenience comes at a cost, since the sheer volume of single-use coffee cups discarded everyday contributes to environmental damage. These cups, sometimes constructed from non-biodegradable materials like plastic or coated paper, stay in landfills for millennia, releasing toxic compounds into the soil and water (Weinberg & Bealer, 2004). The Figure 1 Represents the growing of seeds over the used cups.

As awareness of the environmental ramifications of single-use coffee cups has grown, so too has the demand for new alternatives. One such promising notion that has captivated the imagination of eco-conscious consumers is the invention of biodegradable coffee cups studded with seeds. These plant-able cups not only offer a practical answer to the disposal issue but also introduce a distinctive and sustainable twist to the coffee-drinking experience (Gammon, 2019). Exploring the integration of sustainable materials and the infusion of seeds into the cup unveils the possibilities that lie inside this eco-friendly innovation. From seed options to the cultivation process, the chapter seeks to provide a full grasp of the symbiotic relationship between the act of consuming coffee and ethically sowing the seeds of a greener future (Newman, 2011;Brown, 2013;Lewis & Potter, 2013).

Navigating through the pages of this chapter, a journey is embarked upon that examines not only the environmental effects of behaviours’ but also explores a tangible remedy in the form of plant-able cups. Sip sustainably, sow responsibly – a motto that not only asks us to reflect on the choices but also empowers the society actively contribute to a more sustainable and peaceful cohabitation with environment.

2.0 The Coffee Cup Conundrum

In the daily rhythm of modern life, few rituals are as broadly welcomed as the morning cup of coffee. The scented elixir kickstarts the day, delivering a little break from the pressures of the world (Holford & Cass, 2012). Yet, beneath the comfortable warmth and the rich perfume lurks an environmental conundrum that has been silently festering for decades — the issue of disposable coffee cups. In this investigation of “The Coffee Cup Conundrum,” the predominance of throwaway coffee cups and the significant difficulty they pose in the world of waste management is unravelled (Poortinga et al., 2019).
