Abstract

This book chapter examines the opportunities and challenges of incorporating a rights-based approach into community development initiatives in Pakistan, specifically addressing the nexus of social responsibility and human rights. Background

Pakistan has a wide range of normative diversity in international human rights, national law, Islamic law, and customary practices, all of which influence different actors' ideas of rights, social justice, and aid (Borchgrevink, 2017a). 
The 7.6 Richter scale earthquake that struck Pakistan on October 8, 2005 killed almost 100,000 people and left 3.5 million homeless (ERRA, 2006). As a result, the country became the location of a complex and long-running humanitarian catastrophe, compounded by internal violence (beginning in 2009) and recurring severe floods (2010-12). The earthquake marks a turning point in Pakistan's aid history, transitioning from long-term development assistance to primarily humanitarian help (Borchgrevink, 2017a).
