Introduction

In the present era, we find ourselves amid the fourth industrial revolution, where industries are undergoing transformative changes. The contemporary workplace is in a constant state of evolution, adapting to the dynamic landscape shaped by Industry 4.0. This revolution signifies a paradigm shift in how businesses operate and underscores the ongoing transformation of work and industry practices.

The term “industry 4.0” refers to the fourth industrial revolution, which is a phase of transformation marked by the incorporation of digital technologies into numerous business and industry domains (Alcácer & Cruz-Machado, 2019). Technologies that are changing old industrial processes and opening up new avenues for innovation include robotics, advanced data analytics, blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and robots. Modern manufacturing and production processes are being revolutionized by automation and smart technologies (Alcácer & Cruz-Machado, 2019). The increasing interconnectedness of factories and industries allows them to make use of data-driven insights to maximize productivity and save operating expenses (Kamble et al., 2018). A new era of smart factories is being ushered in by the use of sensors and IoT devices in industrial settings, which enable real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and improved decision-making (Rosin et al., 2021).

Industry 4.0 affects more than only the manufacturing sector; it also has an impact on the banking, transportation, healthcare, and other industries (Oztemel & Gursev, 2020). In addition to increasing operational efficiency, the greater reliance on digital technologies has sparked the development of new services and business models (Frank et al., 2019). The revolution has important ramifications, one of which is the transformation of the nature of work. Upskilling and reskilling the workforce is becoming more and more important to fulfill the needs of a digital economy as technology replaces mundane tasks (Wahab et al., 2021). Because employees must constantly adapt to changing technologies and stay relevant in their fields, lifelong learning has become essential.

The widespread adoption of remote work was one of the features of Industry 4.0 that was expedited by the COVID-19 epidemic (Moosavi et al., 2021). Businesses have to quickly adjust to new methods of operation, mainly depending on digital platforms for collaboration and communication. Since the pandemic, many businesses have made remote work a permanent fixture, which has helped to create a workforce that is more adaptable and decentralised (Moosavi et al., 2021). Apart from the progress made in technology, there is a growing recognition of the significance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace. Companies actively seek to establish inclusive cultures that stimulate creativity and innovation because they understand the value of varied perspectives. Initiatives that advance diversity in the workforce and equitable treatment of people from all backgrounds are becoming more popular (Shore et al., 2018).

There are a lot of changes in work, technology integration is immensely found in all fields of work. Lifelong learning and continuous skill development became crucial as technological change accelerated. Remote work is mostly practiced in many organizations post-COVID-19, organisations are also increasingly prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, recognizing the importance of creating inclusive workplaces that value and support employees from diverse backgrounds (Shore et al., 2018). At the same time, employers also recognize the importance of employee well-being, including mental health. Initiatives promoting work-life balance, stress management, and mental health support gained prominence (Noda, 2020).
