Abstract

This chapter details the usage and benefits in the implementation of metaverse in the education industry. Metaverse is an enormous term that contains every digital aspect of the future. As a result, spheres like education must have the systems readdressed to adopt this technology to retain their accessibility and prolonged existence. There are numerous benefits of digital resources, comprising interactive features and portability. Still, a number of barriers exist. Additionally, there are certain technical, infrastructural, and managerial limitations to it as well. This chapter gives an overview of several aspects of metaverse in education.

Technology-enabled instruction has played a crucial part in education and
development (Weisberg, 2011). Academicians and policy makers have created several frameworks and examined strategies related to emerging technologies used in learning processes. The concept of SMART (Self-directed, Motivated, Adaptive, Resource Free, and Technology embedded) classroom had also taken a leap in the past decades (Lee and Hwang, 2022). It has an objective to plan technology-based learning system. It helps to ensure students active engagement in the learning processes (Collins, 2008). There are numerous benefits of digital resources, comprising interactive features and portability, still a number of barriers exist (Millar and Schrier, 2015). There are certain technical, infrastructural, and managerial limitations (Song and Byun, 2013). Additionally, there are many pedagogical issues and practical issues (Ayiter, 2008). Despite the accessibility of such digital substitutes, both teachers and students still like using conventional methods (Woody et al., 2010).

Internet has always been considered as the key technology (Singh, 2014) in this age that pushes persons to substitute their reality with their agents (Trier, 2007). The most current form of the Internet is the metaverse (Ning et al, 2021). It is also the most discussed topic currently. It has started with the existence of the blockchain (Yoo and Chun, 2021). It took more than thirty years to spread to its current stage (Duan et al., 2021). The metaverse is regarded as an immense multi-dimensional virtual environment existing parallel with the physical world (Joshua, 2021). The users interact with one another via use of digital avatars. Virtual reality (VR) is the forthcoming element of the technology (Moneta, 2020). Nevertheless, metaverse is an enormous world which includes the whole thing inside its mechanisms and strata (Lee, 2021). As the metaverse becomes the burning topic lately, academicians and industry professionals immensely talk and dig deeper into the veracities of this fresh topic (Zhu, 2022).
