Interactive Learning Strategies in Higher Education: From Enhanced Lecture to Team-Based Learning

Abstract

In higher education, interactive learning strategies are a means of encouraging students to participate actively in their education, frequently with the aid of technology. Technology should assist digital pedagogy rather than the other way around. This chapter applies metasystems learning design theory to summarize the diversity of interactive learning strategies in higher education. Based on the hypothesis that interactive learning strategies result in guaranteed learning outcomes, it is clear that passive teaching techniques impact the methodology of traditional lectures and teams. Therefore, within the context of global education, this chapter critically explores 21st-century interactive learning strategies as a response to the following research question: What are the most effective interactive learning strategies in higher education? This chapter describes global trends in the implementation of interactive learning strategies in higher education, which situated current instructional-learning-assessment practices within a framework of critical deconstruction.
