Abstract

AI is transforming the traditional education system globally. The traditional education system based on historical paradigms has a very feeble scope for creating an interactive environment for the specialized students. AI is providing an innovative, diverse, and impactful roadmap in education system to improve the teaching-learning experience not only for teachers but also for students with special needs. AI with its interactive tools has improved the overall educational system by creating enormous opportunities for specialized students. AI-assisted tools such as live chatbots, class dictating software, verbal command-based eBooks, adaptive personalized tutors, image-based learning, and many more have accelerated the teaching-learning experience. Implication of these tools in the education system inculcate critical thinking and improve student engagement in the various teaching activities. The authors have reviewed the impact of AI in transforming the educational system from traditional to AI-assisted modern educational systems.

1. Introduction

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is a recent and positive technology touching life and providing solutions to many tedious real-time problems such as visual tracking (Kumar et al., 2020), cancerous cell classification (Kumar & Ahluwalia, 2021), tourist recommendation analysis (Kumar & Vohra, 2023), sentiment analysis (Jain et al., 2023) and many more (Kumar, Gupta, Bhasin et al, 2023; Kumar, Mamgai, & Jain, 2023; Kumar, Sareen, & Arora, 2023; Kumar, 2023). Apart from these, AI has extended its support in education by providing innovative tools for improving the teaching-learning experience for specialized students. AI has the potential to access the abilities of specialized students to determine their special educational needs.

Special students’ education is impacted as they are suffering from one or more medical disorders such as autism, specific learning disability such as vision, hearing, or verbal impairments, mental disability conditions, a typical health disorder such as asthma, cardiovascular problems, and epilepsy and a pandemic situation like covid-19 (Spencer et al., 2023). These underlying medical, health, and pandemic concerns restrict not only the continuity of attending school but also affect the alertness among the students in understanding the concepts. However, specialized students' requirements and needs are different from the regular students and emphasize the development of a deeper relationship between teacher and students for better upliftment of society (Roorda et al., 2021).

AI aims to provide interactive, innovative, problem-solving tools to facilitate the psychological needs of students with disability (Kumar, Jain, Gupta, & Islam, 2023). In this direction, story-telling tools, chatbots, automated evaluation systems, robots, and prediction systems are employed to enhance the teaching standards and learning capabilities of specialized students (Druga & Ko, 2021; Garg & Sharma, 2020; Hu, 2021; Kim et al., 2021). In Education, AI is impacting various domains that include, teaching, learning, evaluation, curriculum design, and administration. For specialized students, AI aims to provide personalized learning by integrating various other technologies such as augmented reality, and virtual reality (Kumar, Raja, & ljaz, 2023). With the help of these technologies, AI has provided enhanced training to vision and hearing-impaired students so that they can compete with regular students at a faster pace. In addition, AI-based teaching and learning material provide advanced development for assessment of the individual needs by monitoring the assigned independent tasks (Hirankerd & Kittisunthonphisarn, 2020). Figure 2 illustrates the role of AI in the education system.

Recently, with the advancement in AI chatbots and story-telling books, students can communicate with machines about their problems, learning, and thoughts (Kim et al., 2021). AI chatbots enable students to communicate through video, voice, or text. Chatbots are based on natural language processing and hence, provide intelligent answers to students' queries. These applications are quick in providing solutions to the problems anytime, anywhere. Chatbots prove to be efficient learning tools as they provide textual as well as voice-based descriptions (Haristiani, 2019). In addition, chatbots are available in various foreign languages too. The conversation is intelligent and open just like two humans are interacting with each other.
