Abstract

This chapter examines the integration of corporate social responsibility (CSR) concepts in the Slovenian aluminium industry and their substantial influence on this sector. The aluminium industry's commitment to CSR principles, as emphasized in this article, not only reinforces its path towards sustainable growth but also highlights its fundamental and vital role in promoting environmental responsibility, ethical conduct, and social well-being, contributing significantly to local and global contexts. The case study uncovers the holistic approach the two prominent Slovenian aluminium companies took in adopting evolving CSR principles, spanning technology adoption, human rights advocacy. The research analyses CSR practices within the Slovenian aluminium industry, assessing their accordance with Corporate Sustainability Reporting requirements outlined by the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

Methodology

Due to the extensive nature of the study of corporate social responsibility, the focus of first chapter is on a few key European acts in relation to the CSR legal framework. The descriptive method is used to provide an overview of the basic information that is essential for understanding research in the concept of CSR. Using the dogmatic method, this text analyses the legal framework in this area, with a particular focus on the most important acts, namely the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD), the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the proposed Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDD). First chapter introduces a sociological research method that examines the behaviour of social actors and the conditions that influence the development of the concept of CSR. Based on the normative content explored by legal research in the first chapter, the following sections deal with practical findings and experiences. Beyond the discourse on legal norms and values, this article includes the examination of practical cases, guided by a commitment to rational argumentation.

The second chapter uses a case study methodology to extensively analyse secondary data sources, including the company's annual report and sustainable development policy. The 2022 annual reports and sustainable development policies of both companies in Slovenia were analysed between November 2003 and January 2024. This document presents the findings of the case study, highlighting the success of both companies in CSR trends and human rights initiatives. In addition, this text provides valuable insights into the challenges facing the global aluminium sector, with a particular focus on the challenges specific to Slovenia.
