Introduction

The captivating interplay between nutrition and the immune system, stands as a cornerstone of human health, wielding immense significance in fortifying the body's defenses against infections (Munteanu & Schwartz, 2022). The immune system, an elaborate network of cells and molecules, serves as the vanguard against a diverse array of pathogens, including bacteria, viruses and fungi (IQWID, 2023). Central to its optimal functioning is a delicate equilibrium of essential nutrients garnered from the diet (Childs et al., 2019). Nutrition assumes a pivotal role in modulating the immune response by furnishing requisite nutrients to immune cells, thereby influencing their functionality and the organism's capacity to counteract pathogens (Childs et al., 2019; Munteanu & Schwartz, 2022).

At the heart of this symbiotic relationship lies the pivotal role of nutrition in development, maturation, and sustained functionality of key immune cells (Noor et al., 2021).While no single food or nutrient can prevent illness, certain micronutrients like iron and vitamin A are critical for immune function. Optimal nutrition is pivotal in bolstering the immune response and cultivating a varied gut microbiota, thereby fortifying the immune system (Calder, 2021).

White blood cells, including T- cells, B- cells, and macrophages, orchestrate a harmonious defense mechanism crucial for the body's well-being (Carriero et al., 2023). Furthermore, the support of adequate nutrition is manifested in the production of antibodies, proteins that act as sentinels in identifying and neutralizing invading pathogens, thus constituting an indispensable component of an effective immune response (Calder, 2021)

Beyond the cellular realm, nutrition intricately shapes the body's inflammatory responses (Nobs et al., 2020). While inflammation is a natural facet of the immune reaction, an imbalance precipitated by poor nutrition can give rise to chronic inflammation, fostering an environment conducive to various diseases (Bilal et al., 2022). Nutrients, functioning as signaling molecules, intricately regulate the communication among immune cells, ensuring a synchronized and proportionate reaction to external threat (Maggini et al., 2018).

A fascinating dimension of this association lies in the concept of immune memory, wherein optimal nutrition plays a pivotal role in the formation and perpetuation of the body's ability to respond more efficiently upon encountering previously encountered pathogens (Tourkochristou et al., 2021). This adaptive prowess of the immune system contributes to a swifter and more robust defense (Calder et al., 2020). Moreover, the influence of nutrition extends its benevolent reach to mucosal immunity, safeguarding critical surfaces such as the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts (Collins & Belkaid, 2022) . These mucosal barriers serve as frontline defenders against pathogens, and their integrity is intricately linked to proper nutrition, which aids in their maintenance and fortification (Amimo et al., 2022; Krawinkel, 2012; Yang et al., 2011). During periods of illness, the symbiotic dance between nutrition and the immune system becomes particularly crucial (Birgisdottir, 2020). The nutritional demands of the body may escalate, and a well-balanced diet provides the requisite energy and nutrients essential for the immune system to mount a resilient defense, combat infections, and facilitate the repair of damaged tissues (D. Wu et al., 2018).
