Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has, over the last few months, forced us to modify the way we interact with each other both in the delivery of healthcare services and in medical education. Nowadays, telehealth has globally emerged as the most appropriate approach for care, teaching, healthcare professional meetings, and advocacy. This chapter outlines the value of telemedicine, information and communication technologies during such critical situations. The authors draw in this report various experiences from countries belonging to different economic categories and describe how ICT could be a convenient solution in care, monitoring of symptom, treatment management, teaching, sensitization, and continuing education during the epidemic period of COVID-19. In conclusion, with countries facing challenges in dealing with the current situation, they need to encourage the use of ICT in remote health services and to share relevant data for the prevention, mitigation, and monitoring of the pandemic.

Introduction

The new Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is currently the world’s leading health crisis, causing major panic and public concerns. Globally, by mid-May 2020, an estimated 4,275,588 had been infected with COVID-19, including an estimated 287,670 deaths in 150 countries (Worldometers 2020).

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the novel coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. Human-to-human transmission of the disease occurs dertainly and infection is rapidly increasing (Sohrabi et al. 2020).

Telehealth, information and communication technologies (ICT) have become popular alternative methods for safer communications in providing clinical services.

Digital Health Care, although not new, has been reworked and implemented under different approaches to meet the current situation. These technologies can help to promote awareness and education in the communities using different tools such as social media, phone and video calls, and in providing continuing education through online medical conferences (Mun et al. 2018, Kissani et al. 2020).

However, for telehealth to be active or useful during the current COVID-19 pandemic, we must ensure that it is appropriately integrated into our health system.

The aim of this study is to outline the increasing value and utilization of telemedicine and different ICT tools used during the COVID19 pandemic. The need to identify the utility of ICT in telemedicine in some selected countries with different global experience. Give practical solutions for when, how, and for whom this ICT could be used.

The countries chosen selected according to the World Bank ranking based on income levels (Lea 2019).

  • Low-income economies (Gambia),

  • Lower-middle-income economies (Morocco, Egypt, Nigeria, and Cameroon),

  • High-income economies (USA).

Based on the analysis of the different aspects of care, monitoring of management, teaching, sensitization, and continuing education during the pandemic period of Covid-19. We found:
