Abstract

Digital well-being and digital burnout refer to the positive and negative effects of digital technology use including digital social media on people's mental, physical, and psychological lives. The present study aims at exploring the ways through which digital social media can affect a group of EFL teachers' digital well-being and digital burnout. The thematic analysis of the data gathered through digital ethnography, focus group, and discussion indicated three organizing themes of digital well-being, i.e., professional information, network support and solidarity, and four organizing themes of digital burnout, i.e., technostress, job dissatisfaction, job disinterest, and confirmation bias. Some practical suggestions are provided to improve digital well-being and mitigate digital burnout.

Background

Social media are now so intermingled with our modern life style that they are an inseparable part of today’s everyday living and our modern way of living cannot be thought of without them. Digital social media are interactive, communicative technologies through which opinions, interests and any different types of information and content are created and shared over online communities and networks. In spite of different definitions, digital social media have common features such as being interactive (Web 2.0), having user-generated content including data generated by users during their interactions and helping the creation and expansion of online social networks by connecting an individual’s profile with other individuals. These three features are important for the data gathering and discussion of the present study.
