Abstract

The evolution of information technologies has created new perspectives in the field of education, enabling the creation of online learning systems. Among these systems, collaborative learning and adaptive learning are emerging as powerful approaches for optimizing the effectiveness of teaching and learning. The chapter explores the transition from collaborative to adaptive learning, highlighting the design of an adaptive collaborative system. By demystifying the key concepts of each approach, the chapter identifies their respective benefits and explores how they can complement each other. Collaborative learning promotes peer interaction, knowledge sharing and the development of social skills, while adaptive learning focuses on personalized content, continuous feedback and dynamic adjustment based on learning data.

Introduction

Collaborative learning is a field of educational research and practice that has evolved significantly over the decades. Based on vygotsky's (1978) pioneering work on the zone of proximal development, collaborative learning has emerged as a teaching method that emphasizes social interaction, knowledge sharing and peer cooperation to foster richer, deeper learning. However, as technological advances transform the way we teach and learn, it has become imperative to examine how collaborative learning can be integrated into the broader context of adaptive learning.

Adaptive learning, which takes advantage of learning data and information technologies to personalize teaching, has become a key approach in contemporary education (Vanlehn, 2006). It aims to adapt content, resources and teaching methods to the specific needs of each learner (Lamya et al., 2022). This personalization enhances learning efficiency by taking into account the individual differences of each learner (Lamya et al., 2021).

This chapter explores the convergence of these two approaches, from collaborative learning to adaptive learning, with a focus on the design of adaptive collaborative educational systems. We will examine the fundamentals of each approach, their respective benefits, and how they can complement each other to create an enriching learning experience. We will also discuss the tools and methodologies needed to reconcile these two worlds and design educational environments that take advantage of peer collaboration while dynamically adapting to the needs of individual learners.

Thus, this chapter sets out an itinerary that will take us from the foundation of collaborative learning to the development of adaptive educational systems that integrate collaboration to deliver a richer, more personalized educational experience.
