Abstract

This study delves into the attitudes of Generation Z (Gen Z) towards ChatGPT within academic contexts, employing a rigorous analysis. With the rise of advanced language models, understanding how the digitally native Gen Z perceives and engages with ChatGPT is crucial for shaping the future of academic technology. The research assesses various factors influencing Gen Z attitudes, including accessibility, academic pressure, time constraints, language barriers, curiosity, instant gratification, fear of missing out, and technology integration. The study utilizes a robust regression model to comprehensively analyze these factors and their impact on Gen Z's anticipation of increased ChatGPT usage in academics. The research underscores the significance of Gen Z's perspectives in shaping the integration of ChatGPT into educational landscapes. By unraveling their attitudes and perceptions, this research aims to provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and developers, facilitating informed decisions for optimizing the utility of ChatGPT in academic settings.

1. Introduction

The integration of advanced language models, particularly ChatGPT, into educational environments marks a paradigm shift in the way students interact with technology and access information. As “Generation Z” (Gen Z) becomes the predominant demographic in educational institutions, their attitudes towards innovative tools like ChatGPT play a pivotal role in shaping the future of academic technology.

With its ability to comprehend and generate human-like text, ChatGPT holds great promise for various academic applications, ranging from assisting in writing assignments to providing real-time support for diverse subjects (Vakamullu Gopalakrishna & Koppala Venugopal, 2023). The dynamic nature of Gen Z, characterized by a high degree of tech-savviness and digital immersion, makes them a particularly interesting group to study regarding their embrace or resistance to such technological advancements in academic settings.

Crafted for swift connection and cohesive responses, ChatGPT operates akin to conversational tools such as bots and virtual assistants. This interoperability enables businesses to extend their current offerings, creating unique AI-powered chatbots capable of promptly understanding and addressing consumer demands. Additionally, ChatGPT facilitates secure and private conversations (A. Bozkurt et al., 2023).

In the realm of education, new technologies frequently surface and, over time, some fade away, with only a select few becoming integral to the structure. ChatGPT produces an excellent array of concerns for collaborative student work, and naturally, students have the option to independently develop these challenges (M. Perkins et al., 2023).

While students might have gained some understanding of probability through practical experience, engaging in activities like these enhances their comprehension by prompting collaboration on diverse approaches, testing and refining theories. These problems can be swiftly generated whenever a gulf is identified. ChatGPT empowers both teachers and students to craft a variety of materials, such as writing prompts, discussion topics, puzzles, and more. Learners have the flexibility to produce these materials as required and take charge of their own research and practice (E. A. van Dis et al., 2023).

ChatGPT offers a superior step-by-step explanation, complete with visual examples and insights into common pitfalls, surpassing Google's response. The global educational landscape was once again astonished by the emergence of ChatGPT. Acting as both an exceptional instructor and an exemplary student, ChatGPT has the potential to elevate the capabilities and opportunities of both instructors and students. This mirrors the impact of technologies like AI, akin to the transformative role that math calculators played in the past (B. Rathore et al., 2023).

This assistance proves valuable as students extend their education beyond the classroom. AI-powered learning assistants can be employed to guide and support students in their learning journey by improving search capabilities and providing personalized suggestions for materials and other resources (J. Kocon et al., 2023).

Several factors influence the usage of ChatGPT by students for academic purposes, reflecting the intricate dynamics between technology and education. Key determinants include technological proficiency, perceived utility, accessibility and ease of use, integration into curriculum, peer influence, educational institution policies, trust and reliability and privacy and security concerns. Understanding these factors is essential for educators, developers, and policymakers to effectively integrate ChatGPT into educational settings and ensure that it aligns with the needs, preferences, and expectations of students.
