Introduction

The landscape of higher education has been subject to continuous evolution, shaped largely by the relentless progression of technology and changing societal needs. This transformative journey has been particularly evident in the domain of assessment and feedback methodologies. Traditional modes of assessment, once the cornerstone of educational evaluation, are being rapidly supplemented, and in some cases supplanted, by innovative, technology-driven approaches. The purpose of this chapter is to explore this evolution, investigating how emerging technologies, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital tools, are reshaping the assessment landscape in higher education.

Context Setting

Historically, higher education has been a bastion of knowledge dissemination and a crucible for intellectual development. The methods employed to assess and provide feedback to students have been a critical aspect of this educational process. For centuries, these methods remained largely unchanged, revolving around written examinations, oral presentations, and standardized tests (Guangul, Suhail, Khalit, & Khidhir, 2020). However, the advent of the digital age has ushered in a paradigm shift. The last few decades have seen an unprecedented integration of technology in education, fundamentally altering how educators evaluate student performance and provide feedback (Earle, 2002; Thurzo, Strunga, Urban, Surovková, & Afrashtehfar, 2023).

This transition is not merely a matter of replacing paper with pixels; it represents a deeper change in the educational ethos. Traditional assessments often emphasized rote memorization and standardized testing, potentially overlooking critical thinking, creativity, and practical problem-solving skills. In contrast, modern technology-enhanced assessment methods aim to provide a more holistic evaluation of a student's capabilities, encompassing not only their knowledge but also their ability to apply that knowledge in diverse contexts (Al Mamari, 2020; Collis, 1989).

Moreover, the rise of online and distance learning, accelerated by global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, has further necessitated the adoption of innovative assessment methods. These methods need to be adaptable to remote learning environments while maintaining academic integrity and ensuring fair evaluation (Guangul et al., 2020; Mohmmed, Khidhir, Nazeer, & Vijayan, 2020).

Significance of the Topic

Understanding the transformation of assessment and feedback methods is vital for several reasons. First, it allows educators and policymakers to align assessment strategies with the current educational goals and learning outcomes.
