Abstract

This research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative case studies, to explore the relationship between democratic governance and service delivery in Zimbabwean municipalities. Findings reveal that while decentralisation empowers local governments, effective governance structures are crucial for improved service delivery outcomes. Challenges in resource allocation and financial viability underscore the need for increased support and transparent mechanisms. Enhancing transparency, accountability, and citizen participation is vital for rebuilding trust and improving governance effectiveness. Strengthening electoral processes is essential for promoting democratic legitimacy. Implementing these recommendations can revitalise local service delivery and empower residents in urban communities. This study contributes to advancing our understanding of the importance of democratic governance in promoting inclusive and sustainable development in municipalities.
