Abstract

The tourism and hospitality industry has been pivotal in driving economic growth and cultural exchange globally. However, this sector also significantly contributes to environmental degradation, primarily through waste generation. This chapter explores the current challenges in sustainable waste management within the tourism and hospitality industry. It delves into the multifaceted nature of waste management issues, including the high volume of waste, diversity in waste types, and the seasonal nature of tourism which leads to inconsistent waste production. Additionally, the chapter examines the barriers to implementing effective waste management practices, such as lack of awareness, inadequate infrastructure, and financial constraints. By reviewing case studies and best practices from various regions, the chapter proposes strategic approaches to overcome these challenges. The emphasis is on integrated waste management systems, stakeholder collaboration, and the adoption of innovative technologies.
