Abstract

The adoption of new technology for promoting peer learning has changed the educational landscape. Industrialized elites no longer own technology as a bonus. Major changes are democratizing education. The world economy is slowing after the COVID-19 pandemic. The mismatch in employment demand and supply and the appearance of new learning possibilities have forced individuals to prove their traditional training skills and learn how to display, prove, and build their own digital identity and reputation. The authors will revisit digital badges, which are visual representations of skills, knowledge, and achievements gained through learning activities. They can be used to showcase skills, especially for job seekers, and they can be started with younger generations at school to monitor cognitive development and expose them to challenging learning situations in an entertaining way.

Suppose you are an elementary school teacher, but as we said always it’s never too late to learn something new, you decided to form yourself online, using whatever resources available, e.g., online communities of practices, courseware platforms, forums, e-books, video tutorial, etc.

You fall in love with Phyton programming for AI applications, you can now create AI-based applications and websites, even making analytics using AI tools and big data. Suddenly, you wanted to change your current job but you have a problem: you don’t have any certification that proves you’re a fit for the new job? So, you began to think how you can transform your online gained skills into something recognizable by the traditional formal educational system, i.e., partial accreditation which enables you to pursue your quest by joining a new university degree.

Most of studies (O’BYRNE et al.,2015; Chou & He, 2017; Goodyear & Robert, 2017; Morris et al., 2019, Feigenblatt, 2020; Hortsman et al., 2020) qualify Digital badges, known as well as e-badges, and alternative credentials, are online graphical representations or “tokens” that appear as a logo or a webpage as a mean of proving achievements, demonstrate skills and competencies at a more detailed level than traditional degree certificates. They have the potential to be valuable for universities, employers, and recruiters, as they provide evidence of specific accomplishments. Using gamification, Digital badges systems are given to denote that the user has completed certain achievements, such as finishing an assignment or doing well on a test. However, the significance of badges is often tied to the identity of the community in which they are used. Digital badges can serve as boundary objects, helping to negotiate meaning across different settings.
