Abstract

This study examined the impact of a one-month online-based mindfulness meditation intervention focusing on the emotional intelligence (EI) of 100 corporate workers in India. Using a Quasi-experimental approach (pre- and post-test), participants underwent weekly workshops over four weeks. Post-assessment revealed significant improvements in EI domains: 28% in self-regulation, 30% in self-awareness, 10% in empathy, 18% in motivation, and 23% in resilience. Qualitative feedback highlighted benefits such as increased concentration, goal reflection, stress relief, and improved self-control. Participants also noted a focus on health, attributing it to mindfulness practices. These findings suggest that structured mindfulness interventions, rooted in EI principles, can substantially enhance EI in corporate settings, advocating for their integration to improve well-being and productivity among employees at the workplace.

Introduction

Mindfulness at Workplace

The concept of mindfulness has gained prominence in workplace environments due to its perceived ability to improve employee well-being and organizational performance. There is substantial evidence to suggest that mindfulness can improve various workplace aspects, including productivity, job satisfaction, and stress reduction, as reported in Krusche et al. (2019) and Kersemaekers et al. (2018). According to Krusche et al. (2019), mindfulness can foster performance, resilience, and organizational commitment in employees. Kersemaekers et al. (2018) argue that mindfulness practices in the workplace can enhance task proficiency and interpersonal relations by improving individuals' ability to self-regulate their attention. Furthermore, He et al. (2023) demonstrate that workplace spirituality and digital competencies play a role in mindfulness and work performance. Mindfulness in the workplace appears to play a significant role in nurturing workplace spirituality, which in turn fosters heightened work engagement and a greater sense of significance in professional pursuits. As a result, mindfulness might contribute significantly to employment satisfaction and well-being by enhancing a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

The systematic reviews and meta-analyses by Hilton et al. (2019) and Bartlett et al. (2019) have confirmed the positive relationship between mindfulness and workplace performance. A notable emphasis is placed on mindfulness' preventive role in reducing psychological distress, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress among employees. As Bartlett et al. (2019) state, mindfulness programs implemented in the workplace can yield substantial benefits to employees' health and organizational outcomes, including productivity and performance. In addition to its association with individual well-being, mindfulness has also been shown to be linked to leadership styles and organizational culture (Walsh & Arnold, 2020). It appears that mindfulness practices can enhance leadership efficacy and employee engagement across various organizational tiers, as advocated by Walsh & Arnold (2020).

Furthermore, mindfulness has been shown to alleviate workplace stress and boost mental health in numerous studies. Based on Wolever et al.'s (2012) systematic review, mindfulness has been shown to be effective in addressing stress at work and helping employees maintain a healthy work-life balance. In addition, Mortlock et al. (2022) demonstrated the transformative potential of mindfulness interventions within high-stress work settings, suggesting that mindfulness interventions can be adapted to diverse organizational settings. Throughout the literature, mindfulness has been found to have a multifaceted impact on individual well-being, organizational culture, leadership dynamics, and overall productivity in the workplace. By nurturing resilience, abating stress, and fortifying interpersonal relationships, mindfulness interventions stand poised to cultivate a more positive and efficacious work milieu.
