Literature Review

Cybersecurity awareness in libraries is a critical topic in today’s digital age, where the protection of sensitive information and digital resources is paramount. This literature review synthesizes findings from eleven articles that explore various aspects of cybersecurity awareness in libraries, highlighting the main findings and identifying gaps in research.

Kim’s (2016a) article emphasized the importance of libraries advocating for online privacy amidst the challenges of balancing cybersecurity, usability, and privacy. It highlighted incidents like security breaches, network vulnerabilities, and phishing scams, illustrating the tension between security and usability, such as CAPTCHAs causing accessibility issues. The article addressed the conflict between cybersecurity and privacy, citing mass surveillance and potential threats like the FBI's request for a backdoor app. It urged libraries, known for safeguarding intellectual freedom, to support online privacy through initiatives like the Library Freedom Project, emphasizing privacy's role in human autonomy, free expression, and free association in the digital age. Dark et al. (2018) addressed the challenges related to cybersecurity education and workforce development. They stressed the necessity of a cybersecurity digital library (DL) to tackle these challenges. The authors introduced CLARK, a prototype curriculum management platform that hosts cybersecurity learning objects, as a valuable tool for the cybersecurity education community. Ajie (2019) turned the spotlight on cyber security in Nigerian academic libraries, discussing the rising incidence of cybercrime and its economic and security implications. The paper examined the effectiveness of electronic security systems in these libraries, addressing various threats and proposing cybersecurity measures. It underscored the importance of implementing security measures to improve the situation in academic libraries.
