Abstract

In this chapter, the authors present a practical application of ChatGPT in teaching pedagogy to improve traditional Chinese medicine student engagement in the subjects pharmacology and pathology. ChatGPT is a conversational AI model developed by OpenAI. It is based on the GPT (generative pre-trained transformer) architecture, specifically GPT-3.5, which is the third iteration of the GPT series. GPT-3.5 is a state-of-the-art language model that has been trained on a vast amount of text data from the internet. The authors presented a teaching plan that involve the use of ChatGPT. The authors bring the idea of “bring your own paper” (BYOP) that could help students and teachers to improve student critical thinking and does allow the use with student's own device (BYOD).

Methodology

The teaching pedagogy involve a mixed approach of passive learning and flipped learning. Background Knowledge in the form of videos will be provided before the class. The lecturer will expect that student take notes on the video and be prepared to use the notes in class. The students can use ChatGPT to compare their notes prepared from the Video. The comparison will help students for better understanding of the content. The notes can be used a tool for discussion inside the classroom among peers. However, the lecturer is aware that traditional Chinese Medicine students (TCM) may find flip teaching as difficult due to their language barrier. Therefore, the lecturer keeps passive learning as well a teaching module in class. Passive learning involves Case-based learning (CBL) as sub pedagogy in each topic. The lecture tried to maintain a balance between both pedagogies. ChatGPT will used as a tool in flipped teaching so that students understand the content of the videos. Moreover, the lecturer made several engaging class activities involving the use of ChatGPT that are given at the end of session, to help students in developing their critical thinking.
