Abstract

This chapter investigates the intricate relationship between basic scientific discoveries and their integration into successful or unsuccessful commercial ventures. Through a comparative analysis of Genentech and Theranos, this study aims to identify the factors influencing the success and failure of integration of scientific innovation into commercial aspects. Using reviews of literature and previously published reports, this study explores the dynamics of converting scientific innovation into commercial products. The study presents the comparison of two such scientific innovations where one was successful commercially and the other was a failure. The case taken to present successful integration is Genentech's recombinant human insulin and the case taken to present failure is Therano's blood testing technology. The finding of the study presents the factors responsible for success and failure of two. This comparative analysis provides valuable insights for researchers, scientists, academicians, professionals, etc., facilitating them to make strategic planning.
