Blockchain, characterized by its decentralized and unalterable nature, facilitates secure and transparent transactions as well as the exchange of information among multiple parties. In the tourism industry, blockchain has attracted considerable attention due to its potential to transform various aspects of the sector. One key contribution of blockchain is its ability to elevate transparency in tourism. With its decentralized and tamper-proof ledger, blockchain allows the recording of all transactions and data related to the tourism ecosystem. This heightened transparency builds trust among stakeholders, including tourists, travel agencies, accommodations, and local communities. Consequently, tourists can have increased confidence in the authenticity of services and products, while businesses can ensure equitable and transparent transactions (Abdellah, 2023).

The immutable nature of blockchain ensures that recorded information remains unaltered or erased without consensus from network participants. This quality plays a crucial role in combating fraud and enhancing security within the tourism industry. It effectively addresses issues like fraudulent bookings, identity theft, and financial fraud, thereby protecting the interests of both tourists and businesses. Furthermore, blockchain supports the efficient management of digital identities in the tourism sector. Through blockchain-based identity systems, travelers can securely store and handle their personal information and travel credentials. Additionally, blockchain facilitates the automation and execution of smart contracts within the tourism industry. Smart contracts are self-executing agreements that automatically enforce predetermined terms and conditions (Abdel Maksoud, 2023).

The role of blockchain in the tourism industry extends to promoting sustainable practices (Sarfraz et al., 2023). Blockchain technology allows for the creation of transparent supply chains, enabling tourists to trace the origin and sustainability of products and services. The significance of blockchain in the tourism sector lies in its ability to enhance transparency, security, efficiency, and sustainability. By leveraging blockchain technology, the tourism industry can overcome traditional challenges, build trust, and establish a travel experience that is both seamless and responsible for both tourists and industry stakeholders (Sarfraz et al., 2023; Erol et al., 2022).

Blockchain technology has the potential to greatly enhance sustainable tourism by introducing enhanced transparency, accountability, and efficiency across various aspects of the industry. Through securely storing transaction records on a decentralized ledger, blockchain ensures that sustainability claims, such as eco-certifications or carbon offsets, can be verified and remain tamper-proof, thereby fostering trust among consumers. It facilitates fair trade and equitable payment practices for local communities by utilizing smart contracts that guarantee direct and immediate compensation for provided services. Moreover, blockchain streamlines sustainable supply chain management, enabling businesses to transparently track the origin and environmental impact of goods and services, thereby ensuring compliance with environmental standards and promoting ethical consumerism (Abdel Maksoud, 2023).

This chapter aims to examine the ways in which blockchain technology supports the tourism industry and contributes to enhancing transparency, accountability, and sustainability in the sector. While blockchain technology holds great potential, its implementation in sustainable tourism practices is not without challenges. Therefore, this chapter will shed light on the key obstacles associated with the utilization of blockchain technology in the tourism industry. The recommendations provided in this chapter aim to expand current understanding and assist decision-makers in making informed choices regarding the adoption of blockchain technology in the tourism sector.
