Abstract

When the trendsetting ‘buzz word' in technology came forth in recent years, some educators became a little wary of the term “artificial intelligence.” Why is that? Perhaps the idea that something existing other than the human brain to make calculated decisions regarding the creation of exams, or the ability to plan a lesson without hours of research seemed too ‘foreign' or ‘unnatural' to them. However, for some, the realization of yet another branch of technology to assist practitioners in the ever-evolving pedagogical fields seems quite natural as well as massively time-saving. This chapter will attempt to lightheartedly decipher a few points of artificial intelligence and its implications for greatly improving the future of teaching and learning, plus a few wise words of caution… both for the teacher and the learner.

Literature Review

First things first, a brief look into the literature is appropriate before we delve into the actual ‘mini experiment’ I created using the two versions of ChatGPT I tested for this endeavor. The first publication, a book, I studied and would like to mention, is Artificial Intelligence in Education by Holmes, Bialik, & Fadel (2019). Since education or teaching English Language Teaching (ELT) is where I spend most of my time, this seemed to cut straight to the depth of the situation; firstly their expectation being the projection of using AI and how it will have a huge impact on teaching, especially ‘what’ we teach. Notably, the authors discuss the deep and versatile education which can be a booster to student motivation; something we all desire as educators, of course. The book also makes the distinction between artificial intelligence and education technology in particular how AI use implies that learning can improve markedly as this technology keeps evolving, and is harnessed by tech savvy educators. As always, people should approach new technology with an open mind.
