Abstract

Angelica sinensis is an herbal medicine commonly used for gynecological diseases in traditional Chinese medicine. This chapter aims to systematically review the prescriptions in ancient classics and analyze the compatibility of Angelica sinensis with other medicines, categorize the treatment, and understand the applicability from a clinical view. The prescriptions recorded in Shennong Bencao Jing and Jingyue Quanshu that are related to gynecological diseases were summarized, and the characteristics of the prescriptions were analyzed. According to the classification of gynecological diseases in traditional Chinese medicine, such as breast disease, offspring, meridians, and postpartum, the role of Angelica sinensis was analyzed based on the properties, tastes, and channel distribution. The traditional processing methods and recent development of biochemical approaches for extracting active ingredients from Angelica sinensis were also briefly reviewed. This chapter provides a comprehensive reference for Chinese medicine practitioners, clinical researchers, and biomedical engineers.
