Abstract

This chapter documents and discusses the musical piece titled A Cronulla si junceru, based on a text written in Sicilian, that narrates the events of the Cronulla riot. The incident took place in the eponymous South Sydney beach, on 11 March 2005. After criticising some of the media releases about Cronulla, the chapter author discusses various aspects related to the piece, ranging from its conceptual intents in terms of collective memory, to the circumstances of its composition (comprovisation) and performances, through to more technical considerations related to the Sicilian language, the use of text as compositional material.
