Description & Coverage
Description:

Throughout the past decade, the notion of ontologies has influenced research in many application areas including databases, information retrieval, electronic commerce, natural language processing, knowledge management, enterprise systems, systems analysis and design, the Web, and more.

Ontology-Based Applications for Enterprise Systems and Knowledge Management provides an opportunity for readers to clearly understand the notion of ontology engineering and the practical aspects of this approach in the domains of two interest areas: Knowledge Management Systems and Enterprise Systems. A perfect reference for researchers, scholars, postgraduate students, and practitioners, this book aims to gather the recent advances and research findings of various topics in ontology use for these application areas.

Coverage:

The many academic areas covered in this publication include, but are not limited to:

  • Enterprise Systems
  • Knowledge Management
  • Ontology analysis, design, and implementation
  • Ontology Engineering
  • Ontology evaluation and selection
  • Ontology languages: OWL, RDF, UML, etc.
  • Ontology Learning
  • Ontology Management
  • Ontology methodologies
  • Ontology types: foundational ontologies, domain ontologies, task ontologies, application ontologies

Editor/Author Biographies
Mohammad Nazir Ahmad is currently working in the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Systems at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Skudai, Johor Malaysia. He is part of the Software Engineering Research Group (SERG) and is involved in teaching and research in databases, system development and information systems. Under SERG, he is a coordinator of Applied Ontology and Conceptual Modeling Special Interest Group (AOCO-SIG). Nazir holds a PhD from the University of Queensland in Information Systems and a Masters degree in Information Systems from the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He holds a Bachelor degree in Industrial Computing from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia(UKM). His main research interests are innovative solutions for "knowledge-based" information systems that span several areas applying ontology and knowledge management for interoperating information systems, software engineering and enterprise system. Currently, he is an Editorial Board/Review Member of the International Journal of Knowledge Management Practice (JKMP), International Journal of Computer Science and Emerging Technologies (IJCSET) and International Journal of Information, Knowledge and Management (IJIKM). Morever, he is a member of Association for Information Systems (AIS) and International Association for Ontology and its Applications (IAOA).
Robert M. Colomb is currently a freelance consultant. In 2010 and 2011 he visited Sudan University of Science and Technology, Khartoum, where he taught Metamodeling and Model-Driven Architecture, Service Science, Management and Engineering, and also assisted with the Department’s PhD program. At the end of 2009 he completed a 30-month contract as Professor of Information Systems in the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Systems, University of Technology Malaysia. In that position he taught information systems and database courses. He developed and presented special topics courses in Service Science, Management and Engineering, Metamodelling and Model-Driven Architecture, and ontologies for interoperating information systems. In that period, his principal research was in Model-Driven Architecture, facilitated by a grant from the Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. He previously spent 16 years at the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at the University of Queensland, Australia, as a Reader in Information Systems, teaching in several areas of advanced databases. His research there was in interoperating information systems and particularly the ontologies needed to support them. This experience was complemented by a number of consulting projects in various areas of information systems. Before that he spent many years in industry and research positions in Australia and the US. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from MIT in the USA, a PhD in computer science from the University of New South Wales in Australia, and a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from the University of Queensland, in Australia. He as published more than 100 papers in refereed journals and conferences, and four books. He has supervised 17 completed PhD and research masters projects in various areas of database, information systems and computer science.
Mohd Syazwan Abdullah is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Computing, College of Arts and Sciences at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Sintok, Kedah Malaysia and hold the post of Deputy Director of International Telecommunication Union (ITU)-UUM Asia Pacific Center of Excellence for Rural ICT Development . He is a member of Social and Organisational Computing research group, where he teaches and conduct research in the areas of knowledge management, ontology, data warehouse, ICT for development and information engineering. Syazwan hold a PhD in Computer Science (Software Engineering & Knowledge Engineering) from the University of York, UK. His Masters degree in Information Technology and Bachelor degree in Information Technology was obtained from Universiti Utara Malaysia. He has successfully supervised 3 PhD candidates and many masters project in the last 5 years. He serves in the editorial member of the Electronic Journal of Knowledge Management and program committee of several national conference related to knowledge management and information systems. Syazwan is a member of Association of Computer Machinery (ACM) and Management Science/Operations Research Society of Malaysia (MSORSM).
