Abstract

With the automobile sector pacing the tracks among their competitors to lead the market and adopting eco-friendly technologies, a much economic and vital field of making use of the manufactured product beyond its useful life span is widely neglected. This paper throws light on the necessity for implementing and highlights the various reasons for which these guidelines have not come to the attention of the responsible organizations including law making agencies, automobile manufacturers and as well the consumers. An interpretive structural modelling analysis is made to point out ten driving factors in consultation with various experts from the relevant fields and the results provide guidance to how far the idea of design for dis-assembly and re-manufacturing has sought the world for the sustainability of the automobile manufacturers in the industry, for the days to come.

Economic and effective recycle of ELVs is regarded as a hot spot in sustainable development because the earth is overlooking a situation of depleting resources and prevailing tendency of circular economy. To explore into the drivers of ELV recycling sector and figure out the reasons for the infancy in market of recycling, the existing state of ELV treatment operations and the hinted factors which will lead to the success is summed up from the industrial point of view.

Remanufacturing is deemed as an eventual format of recycling, since it retains the identity of the original component and in addition provides value insertions in the course of the remanufacturing operations which aid to expand product dependability, broaden life span and enhance ease of maintenance. This remanufacturing system has been viewed as far reaching since it joins all key business characteristics like monetary, regulatory, environment, administrative, market and technical features. These are the basic issues that deal with achievability of remanufacturing dependent on new product development, administrative support and environmental protection. On account of remanufacturing, nonetheless, organizations would attempt to consider extra issues, like regulatory, administrative and environmental facets of the drafted component. This draws attention to the concept that one of the most pivotal factors in remanufacturing is proper designing of product/components (Wu Cheng Han, 2013; Ijomah et. al., 1998).The process of remanufacturing a second hand item will render productive only if it is structured as per 'DfR' guidelines, else this may present unreliability in remanufacturing operations and activities, especially in executing dismantling tasks. The theme of Design for Disassembly has become a rising matter of concern as it enables comfortable dismantling of parts/components. Generally, DfD involves (Favi et. al. 2019):

  • 1.

    Streamlining the further de-fabricating process.

  • 2.

Diminish cost and time required for dismantling.

  • 3.

Allow component reclamation and retain materials.
