Folk paper-cut art, a traditional Chinese artistic form, has been a subject of significant research due to its unique historical and cultural significance (Gu. Y, 2023; Chen & Wei, 2023). The art form has been recognized for its unique artistic style, inheritance, and development (Cai, 2021; Shadur & Shadur, 2002; Abhishek, 2024). With a long history and a wide range of shapes, folk paper-cut art has served as a model for modern visual communication design in China, inspiring designers to think creatively (Gao, 2022; Hu et al., 2022). Moreover, there has been a discussion on the comparison and integration between traditional Chinese folk paper-cut art design and modern graphic design, emphasizing the relevance of this traditional art form in contemporary visual communication (Cheng, 2021; Tembhurne et al., 2022; X. Liu, 2020). The spread of paper-cut art across China has made it one of the most popular traditional folk arts, reflecting its deep-rooted cultural significance (Chai et al., 2022). Additionally, the digital communication of folk art in urban scenes has been explored, highlighting the relevance of this traditional art form in the modern digital context (Y. Zhang et al., 2022; Li et al., 2022). Furthermore, traditional paper-cut art has been linked to modern cosmetic packaging design, emphasizing its continued influence and relevance in contemporary artistic design methods (Wu, 2022; Ilyas et al., 2022).
The traditional art of paper cutting, known as kirigami, has also gained attention as a promising approach for creating shape-morphing structures and materials, showcasing the adaptability and potential of folk paper-cut art in modern material science and engineering (Hong et al., 2022; Bisht & Vampugani, 2022). Moreover, there has been a proposal to inherit Chinese folk painting art from the aspects of value edification, rich content, and multiple forms, emphasizing the need for protection and preservation of this traditional art form (Shi, 2022; Chui, Gupta, & Vasant, 2021). The utilization of virtual reality technology for the digital protection and reconstruction of folk art resources has been suggested, highlighting the potential for integrating traditional art forms into modern technological platforms (S. Wang, 2022; Gaurav et al., 2023; Y. Wang et al., 2022). Additionally, the wisdom and aesthetic interests epitomized by folk art have been recognized, emphasizing its role in effectively inheriting Chinese traditional culture (Wei, 2022; Kaur, 2023). Furthermore, there has been a call to make breakthroughs in talent, content, influence, and supervision to promote the development of folk art, underscoring the importance of nurturing and safeguarding this cultural heritage (Zhou et al., 2021). The emerging role of kirigami as an elegant design and manufacturing solution in mechanical metamaterials has further showcased the adaptability and relevance of traditional paper-cut art in modern material engineering (H. Zhang & Paik, 2022; Hasan, 2023). Finally, the design of a microprocessor-based art digital protection website has been proposed to preserve, inherit, and disseminate folk artworks, highlighting the efforts to digitize and safeguard traditional art forms through modern technological platforms (Gong, 2022; Chui, Gupta, Liu, et al., 2021).
Folk paper-cut art holds a significant position in Chinese cultural heritage and continues to inspire contemporary artistic and technological developments. Its unique artistic style, historical significance, and adaptability to modern contexts underscore the importance of preserving and promoting this traditional art form for future generations. In this context, we propose a long short-term memory (LSTM) approach for recognizing the paper cut patterns.
