Abstract

This is a review study based on the research articles published in peer reviewed journals and cited in various books over time. The purpose of the study is to highlight the importance of forest resources and major issues pertaining to these resources in India and underlining the consequences of forest depletion. The study focuses on the role of forests in rural livelihood, employment and income generation, poverty alleviation, and interaction of women with forests. Issues like market failure and trade-off between forest and economic development have also been touched upon. The way various researchers depict the tremendous pressure on forest resources and consequences of the same have been identified through review of the research studies.
