Dr. Funk’s research is grounded in Critical Media Literacy, a framework incorporating Media Studies and Critical Pedagogy to further social justice through critical engagement with media. He is currently developing a framework of media analysis called Trans*+ Media Literacy that, in addition to drawing inspiration from Critical Media Literacy, incorporates Feminist and Disabilities Studies to underscore the need for the critical analysis of trans*+ representation in and engagement with media. Named by the American Educational Research Association (AERA) as an “Emerging Scholar” in 2013 for his research in Critical Media Literacy, Dr. Funk has published in Critical Questions in Education and Sexuality and Culture, and other publications committed to advancing the education of traditionally underrepresented students. Moreover, he serves as a faculty moderator for an online support group hosted by the Gender Spectrum, and as a consultant to the Youth and Gender Media Project, two non-profit organizations committed to increasing awareness of and social justice for trans*+ individuals. Collaborating with his partner, Dr. Jaydi Funk, he is currently analyzing data collected in a large-scale mixed-methods study addressing gender equity in medical practices and media.
