Kyoung-suk Sung

Kyoung-suk Sung (sung@mpib-berlin.mpg.de) is a Visiting Scholar at the Max-Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin. She holds a Ph.D. in film studies from the University of Johannes Gutenberg Mainz, Germany, where she also earned her M.A. Her research expertise lies in film sociology, with a focus on the dynamic interplay between film and society. Dr. Sung's academic pursuits encompass various areas, including the history of cinematic emotion in East Asian and European cinemas, the visual language of films and their societal impacts, as well as the multifaceted roles of film within a sociological context. Currently, she is immersed in her fully-funded, long-term research project titled “A Study of East Asian Socio-critical Cinema: Genre-Theme-Effect.” This project seeks to explore the rich diversity of visual forms used for social critique in East Asian cinema, facilitating international comparisons and shedding light on its evolution as a medium for social criticism and the preservation of cultural memory.
