Joost Vaesen

Joost Vaesen is an assistant professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He teaches “Global City-Region Brussels. Language, Policy & Identity”, “Urban Education” and several courses on subject didactics in the field of culture and society within the Educational master's program. As former director of the Brussels Studies Institute (BSI) (2012-2019), Joost Vaesen was involved in various capacities (promoter, co-promoter, project management, quality control, ...) in more than 45 multi-actor projects in which a complex societal issue in Brussels was researched via integrated knowledge (inter-university, multi-/interdisciplinary, cross-community), always in co-creation with public, semi-public and/or private actors. From this perspective, he gained expertise about knowledge production and knowledge sharing in a (small) world city like Brussels and the interaction between academic, public, semi-public and private actors in this process. He also focuses on education policy in Brussels and the advantages and challenges of ‘urban’ education.
