Arien K. Muzacz

Arien K. Muzacz (she/her/hers) is a Clinical Associate Professor of Counseling at Oregon State University and a humanistic/existential counselor and educator. As a professional counselor, she has worked with clients from diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural groups, with a range of ages and abilities, who hold a variety of sexual, gender, socioeconomic, and class identities. Her clinical training at the City College of New York included counseling older clients living with HIV who identified as cisgender female and Black/African American. Before entering academia, she worked as a counselor in an integrated behavioral health setting, then as a clinical director in prevention at a large community-based organization, supervising master’s-level practicum students and interns. Dr. Muzacz has taught courses in multicultural and social justice counseling and advocacy to master’s students since 2018. As an educator and advocate, Dr. Muzacz encourages master's and Ph.D. students to challenge systems of oppression that continue to criminalize substance use, stigmatize sexual behaviors, and limit educational opportunities for students on the basis of racial, ethnic, linguistic, or class-based identities. Her research interests include sexuality, addictions/prevention, disparities in health and education, and counselor education and supervision.
