"Cognitive Phones for Sensing Human Behavior" offered for open access for 30 days

Will the New Generation of Smart Phones Be Smarter Than You?

By IGI Global on Feb 24, 2016
IGI Global Editor Travels To Myanmar Technology is growing smarter every day, and programmers and software developers have created extensive neural networks and algorithms to imitate human behavior in smart phones. Neural networks are collections of processors that mimic the way the human brain works, but these systems typically take a huge amount of processing power to run.

At the International Solid State Circuits Conference in San Francisco earlier this month, MIT researchers presented a new chip designed specifically to implement neural networks. This new chip will allow for these networks to run locally on your phone without an Internet connection, changing the game for neural networks in smartphones.

Recent developments in cognitive phone applications have advanced abilities to analyze, store, extract and process information on the mobile phone platform, in both the areas of hardware configuration and intelligent software. Deriving the capabilities of sensing and inferring human behavior and social context from its own platform, connected sensors, and/or linked servers, these smartphones are designed to “think” just the way a human would.

In the IGI Global chapter “Cognitive Phones for Sensing Human Behavior,” authors Ling Pei (Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China), Robert Guinness (Finnish Geodetic Institute, Finland), and Jyrki Kaistinen (University of Helsinki, Finland) explore the development of the cognitive phone and discuss different models and sensors based on human behavior. Part of the 3-volume Encyclopedia of Mobile Phone Behavior, this research explores the future of cognitive sensors in mobile systems.
